BabyBird first formed in 1995 they are fronted by Stephen Jones who until the band got back together was doing a lot of solo music, which had a bluesy melodic tone within a Brit-pop mould.
Besides the obvious ‘You’re Gorgeous,’ single which managed global success the Indie band then a five piece enjoyed a lot of success touring all over the globe, but for me it is the less talked about tracks such as ‘Bad old man’ and ‘Goodnight,’ that should be talked about when concerning this band.
It is strange to think that if Jones was not experimenting with recordings in his home in Sheffield, none of this would have happened. The simple fact is that it did and as time has gone on I have been keeping a close eye on what Babybird. It is great to see that there music is much stronger. There is a maturity about the way they play and they have stepped away from more commercial tracks such as ‘Candyshop.’
At the start of their career this was needed to get the tongues wagging and get those chart numbers ticking over, but this is a band with an international legacy so this although a crowd pleaser is a track they do not have to be pander to. I for one was very impressed with their album last year, brought out on American Label/publishers Unison Music.
Unison Music have been making waves for a while now, but quietly going about their business and now I believe this could be the year they come to prominence.
BabyBird have a vast back catalogue and I am really looking forward to seeing them, but it should all be about the album The Pleasure of self destruction especially the track ‘I’m not a Killer’
The melodic tones of this album herald a new chapter in the tapestry of Babybird see you there, as it should be a great night one of reminiscence and future talk.
