Quenched interview Serbia’s Exit Festival

1) What made Serbia start Exit festival in the beautiful Novi sad?

Serbia did not start the festival, but Exit did start because Serbia need a change.  The festival started as a protest against the communist Milosevic regime.
2) Who else is involved with the running of exit with regard to local help and sponsors?

We tend to involve a lot of partners, ngos, volunteers, citizens, etc. It really needs to be a team effort.

3) What are your thoughts on the Serbian music scene?

I think that it was literally destroyed in the 90’s. It needs a revitalisation, and Exit has a special project now dedicated to it.

4) Do you think Exit showcases the world’s top talent signed or unsigned or just big signed Musician from around the world?

i think that we do not bring necessarily the biggest talent, but I think that festival is much more than just big names.  Our festival has a reputation for its vibe and atmosphere, we feel it is important to maintain that. Our program is very varied with over 10 stages covering all genres of music and that we are slowly building smaller stages profile. We see each stage a small social network.

5) What are the long term plans for Exit and do you want it to become more commercial?

No, not really. We want just it to become better.

6) In what way is Exit different from other festival?

Well, it is a nice venue. The festival takes place in a 17th Century Fortress overlooking the river Danube under the hot Balkan sunshine. We have a varied and progressive program and by far the lowest tax price and beer prices. Wonderful and good looking people in the Balkans. Nice people running it J

7) Are you surprised by the popularity of Exit it is still a relatively young festival?

I am not surprised. We worked hard. But still there is a long way to go. We want to continue to attract people from all over the world.

8) Do you think as a festival it is your duty to show what’s popular at the moment or what is going to be big in the future?

Yes i do, a bit of both

9) Why do you think Exit will last as a festival for years to come?

Well, maybe because it is a lot of fun to organize a festival. I do not know.

We really try to offer more to festival goers each year with better facilities and quality artists. There is an edge to it.

10) On a personal note what does Exit mean to Serbia as a nation and what does it hold for us as an audience in the future?
It is a project that presents Serbia in better light to the outside world.  That is for sure.

Our audience are nice and sharp young people, future intellectuals, people that will be building the future of the Balkans. We try to shine some optimism, stop the brain drain, etc.

A lot of challenges in the years to come…

Cheers

Bojan (Festival general manager)
