This was the first time I had actively drifted to a gig at the Red Station usually I happen upon them, but this time was different as soon as I arrived to the upstairs of the venue it was full of people waiting for something to take place.
People who were in my usual position of just turning up out of curiosity and those who are used to this phenomenon, so they waited patiently for the performances to begin on stage.
I had wanted to see Dave Faitala for a while and as I saw him accompanied by Clarissa to the stage, the time was finally at hand. Their sound is a combination of carefully honed classic guitar skill mixed with the sounds of electro, complemented by Clarissa on the keyboard.
The sound was very natural as the audience showed their appreciation with each track. Often with electro mixes you find it sounds slightly contrived, but the musicians seem to stay clear of this particular minefield.
While combining all the elements of folk they manipulated ambient sounds that they had created, it was good to see that each track told a story and plotted a time that they were exploring, through their very unique medium of sound.
It is also refreshing to hear the sound of Dave’s classical style streaking through some of the tracks that he performed, the use of keys really adds to the overall composition of their work.
While bottle-necked venues like this can work as a hindrance I felt that it helped in the performance in that everyone was filtered towards the performing area so all who watched could grasp all the skill that goes in fusing genres that actually work together.
I felt as I watched Dave on stage there is a lot more to come from him as a performer, I can see more gigs with him playing a prominent role in the line ups. With his soft melodic tones ably harmonised at times by Clarissa you cannot help, but hope for more.
I will look forward to seeing this duo plus laptop in the future as then we can gauge what will happen next and with tracks such as ‘Tending to Zero,’ I eagerly await what happens during the next few years for Dave Faitala.
