The opening day started with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere for the screening of Mogwai Burning video, which was dark, yet beautifully delicious. Then I spied a random music video being made by Dog is dead in The Corner Barber shop, I stumbled onto Matt and Phreds near the end of the night, it housed a continental plethora of musical talent although they were very different from each other they all possessed an ad lib style that added to their charm.
Finally for day one I entered the euphoric Roadhouse for contort yourself club night amongst the spent mesh of bodies I found myself wondering what was in store for me in the following two days.
Tip of the Day: Canadian collective Brasstronaut
Thursday started off more laid back as I attended the Brands and bands panel in The Place hotel this event was put on by Northern Soho’s Sarah Cheal. The panel was insightful, yet not as stuffy as you may think it could have been and it was also great to hear some words from Philip Cohen himself about the coming issues now there is more emphasis on the private sector.
After this education I was drawn to the Rock Sound at Night and Day café it was there I heard roaring guitars and some raging strumming, which did not disappoint among all the bands the one that made me mosh away the most was the rapturous quintet Japanese Voyeurs, well worth the wait.
Tip of the Day Japanese Voyeurs
The last day was all about the music nothing else would do so we started at Trof in Northern Quarter to see Brown Brogues these are probably the only musicians who I take great joy from, I like hearing their bitter and twisted lyrics.
Then to Moho live to check out what the Mobo stage had to offer after seeing MZ Bratt own that stage it was on to the dulcet tones of Danae’o, which captivated the audience.
Finally the man I had been waiting for Skepta from his beginnings at Roll Deep he has flourished as a solo artist, the crowd went wild with every track, I was soaked in people grinding and dancing in this grime filled atmosphere it was a great end to my festival what will next time hold.
Tip of the Day MZ Bratt
